ELA Monday

Write your personal reaction to the poem "Choices' by Nikki Giovanni.

1.  Read the poem 2 or 3x.
2.  Try to practice reading aloud the poem and working with the line breaks, the stanzas, and the punctuation so you can find a flow of reading you think makes sense.
3.  Next, type a paragraph which states the line, or stanza, or word which you made the most personal connection with.  You need to include the quoted section as well.   Explain what it meant to you.  If you can include an your personal connection.  Below is an example of this analysis activity.

The stanza that really stuck out to me was If I can't have what I want... then my job is to want what I've got an dbe satisfied that at least there is something more to want. This stanza really stuck out to me because there are people that take so many little things for granted. Some people would be so thankful for all the little things we don't appericiate. Some people give up things they want more than anything just so you can have what you want. So appericiate all they little things other people do for you.

  3. the part that stuck out to me is when she says when i cant have what i want. i connect to this because if i cant have what i want i have to work for it or work for the money for it.

  4. The few lines that stuck out to me in the poem "Choices" by Nikki Giovanni would be, "since i can't go where i need to go... then i must...go" because it has a lot of thought in just those few lines, and has a lot of emotion. She sounds like she made a big choice in her life that changed everything. There is not really a personal connection for me, I just really liked that line.

  5. since I cant go where i need to go than i must go where the signs point. This sticks out to me because she is happy with what she has and she is going where her heart is telling her to go not where she wants to go.

  6. One of the stanzas that really stuck out to me was "when I can't express what I really feel i practice feeling what i can express and none of it is equal i know but that is why mankind alone has learned to cry" The last part of this stanza really strikes me as insperational. because of this one sentence "thats why mankind alone has learned to cry. this struck me as isnprational because she says oonly we have learned to cry.

  10. The stanza that stuck out for me in the poem "Choices" was the one that said “If I can’t have what I want… then my job is to want what I’ve got and be satisfied.” This stanza I can relate with or talk about because so many people in this world take what they have for granted. When we take what we have for granted we don’t realize how lucky we are to have what we were already given. So sometimes you need to stand back and appreciate what you have in the present not the past or the future, the present.

  14. The stanza that really stuck out to me in the poem "Choices" by Nikki Giovanni was, "since I can't go where I need to go than I must go where the signs point." This stanza really stuck out to me because I think she's saying that she can't go on vacation or on a trip, but she still has to work and save up. I totally agree with this statement because you don't just get things for free you need to work for them and earn them. Hard work equals good prizes or rewards.

One of the stanzas in the poem "Choices" by Nikki Giovanni, that stuck out to me was "When I can't express what I really feel I practice feeling what I can express, and none of it is equal I know but that is why mankind alone has learned to cry". This stanza makes me understand what the writer is trying to tell me, and helps me realize exactly what she is feeling.

  16. The stanza in Choices that i picked was
i can't express what i'm realy feeling. I picked it because some times you have to tell what you are felling.

  19. If I can't do what I want to do then my job is to not do what I don't want to do. I like this part because as a person I have to do what I want to do or settle for what i have.

    1. Yeah, sometimes I just make myself deal with stuff that I don't want to do but know I need to. But if I don't want to do it and I don't have to, I dont'!!!

  20. The stanza that stuck out to me is "if i can't have what i want... then my job is to want what i've got and be satisfied that at least there is something more to want" I like this because just because you can't get what you want doesn't mean you need to be sad and just be happy with what you have.
